The Winship Neighborhood Concert
Conceived and Produced by kristen osborn
About the project:
The Winship Neighborhood Concert (WNC,) was an immersive concert event that gathered folks from throughout the community of UT Austin’s School of Theatre & Dance to celebrate our shared humanity and connect us through music, storytelling, food and drink.
The concert began in a single gathering space, where audience members and musicians from the neighborhood mingled and noshed. The host and ensemble welcomed the group with a song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” From there, the audience was invited to wander the Winship building and find performances in unexpected places, from a locker room shower area to a dressing room to a secret spiral staircase. In these spaces, the audience had individual encounters with their Winship Neighbors, musician-storytellers who shared songs, stories, connections and conversations generated from the music of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
The project was inspired by Sylvan Esso’s contemporary cover of Fred Rogers’ “There Are Many Ways to Say I Love You,” which originally aired as part of the PBS television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
